Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra has explained the reasons why he has named his old teammate Park Ji-Sung as the godfather of his newborn son.

The duo formed a close bond during the six years they played together at Old Trafford, helping the Red Devils win four Premier League and Champions League titles.

Evra became a father for the fifth time in May and frequently shared updates on the early years of the life of baby Lilac, who is their first child with fiancée Margaux Alexandra.

Lilas’ godfather is Park, with the couple who reunited after Evra arrived in Manchester from Monaco in the January 2006 signing period, six months after the South Korean himself joined.

The friendship was formed by living in the same area, Alderley Edge, playing each other in Pro Evolution Soccer and sitting together in the coach for the matches.

Evra had hinted before Lilas was born that Park had been named her godfather, and the couple had remained united in the years since they left Old Trafford.

He fulfilled that promise to the South Korean and now explained that the character of the former midfielder is why he entrusted him with the responsibility.

“Because I like shy people!” Evra said when asked during a question and answer from United fans why he had such a close bond with Park.

“When someone doesn’t open up too much, that’s when I go to those people.

“Ji is my son’s godfather, he’s more than a friend. I talked to him this morning, so it was natural.

“He’s such a humble person but he’s also a funny guy. You don’t see that side, because he just shows me. He’s a real brother.”

It is clear that the pair remain united, despite not playing at the same club since Park left for the Queens Park Rangers in 2012.

And Park revealed last year that they still meet and keep in touch, and calling Evra his “best friend.”

“We stayed friends, of course, and he came to my wedding a couple of years later,” he told the United club’s website.

“At that time I had been in America, so it was a case of coming to the wedding in Korea and then returning almost directly to France.

“He stayed one day, and that’s a long way to go on a day trip! He also came to Korea a few times for private events I’ve had, so I was very grateful.

“Sometimes these days we get together for lunch or dinner in London or as long as we’re in the same place.

“We talked on the phone or texted and followed our strong relationship wherever we were. Finding it was one of the great pleasures of my life.

“Patrice was a great teammate, but honestly it’s more than that; I think he’s my best friend of my whole life. “
